Geoff Hickswas born and raised in a very musical Newcastle family. He tried a variety of musical instruments before settling on the clarinet and played extensively in concert and competition with the City of Newcastle Concert Band under Victor Grieve and Ian Cook. He moved to Sydney in 1985 to pursue an IT career. Musical activities took a back seat until he joined the Sydney University Musical Society in 2001. Since Geoff's early interest in singing, mostly limited to Psalms and Hymns in church has escalated to become an all-consuming passion with membership in three varsity choirs, a Ukrainian Orthodox Church choir and reading liturgy from Cyrillic script. Geoff has frequently attended Intervarsity Choral Festivals, including Newcastle - Sydney 2007. Returning to Newcastle in 2005, Geoff now sings with the St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church choir, the Newcastle University Choir and the competition-winning University of Newcastle Chamber Choir. Geoff is studying vocal technique with Chris Allan was in Newcastle Festival Opera's production of Bernstein's Wonderful Town, in a small solo, and the role of Kromow in The Merry Widow.
