Jennifer Barnes

Jennifer Barnes
Jennifer Barnes sings a wide range of styles from evergreen popular music through music theatre to oratorio and opera. She has appeared as a guest artist with Opera Australia, State Opera of South Australia, Opera Queensland, Opera Hunter, Sydney Philharmonia Choir, Newcastle University Choir, Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, The Hunter Orchestra and Hunter Sinfonia. Her roles for Opera Australia include the title role in Madama Butterfly, Antonia (Tales of Hoffmann), Alms Sister (Suor Angelica), Ellen Orford (Peter Grimes), the Governess (Turn of the Screw) and Frasquita (Carmen). Other roles are the Valkyrie Grimgerde (Die Walkure), Mother (Amahl and the Night Visitors), Rosalinde (Die Fledermaus), and Micaela (Carmen), Natalya (The Proposal), Hirsinde (Abelard and Heloise) and Earth Mother (The Shining Isle). Concert highlights include the opening concert for the Federation Concert Hall in Hobart, pre-match entertainment for the Sydney Swans, Viva Vivaldi at the WACA Cricket Ground and Opera Under the Stars in Broome in addition to intimate recitals at the Newcastle University Conservatorium and Singleton Arts and Music Society. Jennifer has garnered rave reviews and a CONDA award for her interpretation of Cio-Cio San in Madama Butterfly in addition to the Doris Smith Scholarship which enabled her to undertake study with Josephine Veasey in London in 1990. Jennifer conducts a private teaching studio and is currently completing a PhD through Sydney Conservatorium into the operatic soprano voice.
