Martin Buckingham’s work in the performing arts has encompassed a wide range of disciplines, from composer to director, playwright to performer and producer to designer. Martin began his studies in Music Theatre, completing a Degree with First Class Honours. This period of study lead to scholarships and performance opportunities in London’s West End where, ironically, he found a passion for opera. After a time abroad Martin, returned to Australia to attend the Sydney Conservatorium Opera School, then undertaking degrees in Psychology, Teaching and finally completing a Masters’ in Visual and Performing Arts. Martin has been awarded the Helpmann Opera Scholarship, Commonwealth Post Graduate Scholarship CSU, Big Brother UK Scholarship for Theatre, Music Theatre Scholarship to The Australian Institute of Music and was an Opera Australia Young Artist Program finalist. After performing approximately 25 roles in plays and music theatre, Martin began a short stint with Pacific Opera singing the roles of Ferrando in Cosi fan tutti and Almaviva in The Barber of Seville, before gaining full time employment with Opera Australia. Since then Martin has performed in over 30 productions with the company featuring in the chorus as well as performing and covering principle rolls. The roll of Rodolfo is one of the most exciting characters for an operatic tenor to sing in the repertoire, for years Martin has been waiting for the opportunity to perform it, and it is now his chance has come.
